Cultivating a Grateful Heart

Last night we were blessed to hear from Bethany Smith on the topic of cultivating a grateful heart.  Here are some of the key points from her talk.

I.                    The Discipline of Gratitude

A.      Gratitude is a direct reflection of our relationship with God. 

B.      It does not come naturally.

C.      Forgiven people are grateful people

D.      Gratitude is a discipline in the midst of trial and prosperity.

II.                  3 Stages of Discipline

a.       Toddler Gratitude-baby Christians

                                                               i.      Born out of duty, told to do so

b.       Teenage Gratitude

                                                               i.      Being genuinely  thankful for the blessings of the Lord

c.        Adult gratitude

                                                               i.      Joy for simply knowing the Lord regardless of your circumstances

III.                 Application

a.       In Myself-dwelling on the goodness of the Lord

                                                               i.      Ways to foster a grateful hear t in my personal time with the Lord

1.       Journal

2.       Once a week write what your thankful for

3.       365 notecards (one for each day)

a.       Write 3 things you are thankful for that day

4.       Prayer book

                                                             ii.      Ways to have a grateful hear in everyday activities-what stirs your affections for Jesus?

1.       Quiet time and coffee or being around those that are complainers?

b.       In my family-retelling the deeds of the Lord

                                                               i.      In my marriage

1.       Spend the 1st 30 minutes of a date night discussing things that you are grateful for

                                                             ii.      With your kids

1.       Large frame that contains pictures of things the Lord has blessed your family with over the years.
